Prague Castle Interiors and Exteriors
-
In this walking circuit you can choose from the following walks:
Prague Castle, the ancient seat of Czech rulers—from princes and kings to a lone queen and modern-day presidents—is an extensive complex of historical buildings, churches, and courtyards. Each structure reflects the architectural style of the era in which it was built, offering a vivid timeline of the city's rich history.
On our tour, you'll explore the Romanesque basilica and its watchtower, the grand Gothic cathedral, the ornate Renaissance decorations, and the imposing Baroque palace. We will traverse the entire castle grounds (exteriors only), starting at the main gate and ending at the Old Castle Stairs, where a breathtaking panorama of Prague's historic centre, the Vltava River, and its iconic bridges awaits you.
Step inside Prague Castle, a historic seat of Czech power, home to princes, kings, a singular queen, and today's presidents. The castle's interiors reveal a fascinating blend of architectural styles across centuries.
We will visit the stunning St. Vitus Cathedral, known for its impressive Gothic architecture, and the Old Royal Palace, where you’ll step into the majestic Vladislav Hall. Here, you’ll witness the infamous "defenestration window," where royal regents were thrown out, igniting the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century. We will also explore the Romanesque Basilica of St. George, the final resting place of St. Ludmila, a revered Czech saint.
Our tour continues along the picturesque Golden Lane (Zlatá ulička), a charming row of tiny historic houses, some preserved to reflect early 20th-century life. One of these humble dwellings once served as the workspace of Franz Kafka, the famed Jewish writer. We will conclude our journey with a visit to the medieval dungeon, where you can see historical instruments of punishment and imagine the grim atmosphere of the old prison.
