Content of the walk:
The Old Town is the oldest part of Prague's medieval quarter, founded by King Wenceslas I as early as 1235. It offers a remarkable opportunity to experience a variety of historic architectural styles within a compact area. Our journey begins at the Powder Gate (Prašná brána), where the "Royal Route" traditionally started. Here, you’ll see the striking contrast between the towering Gothic Powder Gate and the elegant Art Nouveau façade of the Municipal House, standing side by side.
Just a few steps away, we encounter an example of Cubist architecture, a unique style that emerged in Bohemia in the early 20th century, making it the only distinctly Czech architectural movement. We will then visit the Fruit Market (Ovocný trh), where I will point out the house where the renowned astronomer Johannes Kepler once lived during his time in Prague. Do you know his famous laws of planetary motion? We can delve into their significance and what they reveal about the universe.
Our tour continues to Charles University, founded by the beloved King Charles IV. Today, it serves as the seat of the university's rector. Nearby, we will touch on the musical legacy of the great composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who premiered his iconic opera Don Giovanni at the Estates Theatre, a venue steeped in history.
The heart of our exploration is the Old Town Square, surrounded by numerous architectural gems in various historical styles. Here, we will see two impressive monuments, including the historic Old Town Hall. The highlight of the square is the Prague Astronomical Clock (Orloj), perched on the Town Hall’s tower. Although many gather to watch the hourly procession of the apostles, the true marvel lies in the clock’s intricate astronomical dial. I will explain its fascinating features, and you’ll be amazed by the ingenuity of our ancestors, who crafted this masterpiece in 1410 without the aid of modern telescopes or technology.
From the Old Town Square, we will continue along the Royal Route, culminating in a walk across the iconic Charles Bridge. This medieval stone bridge, adorned with a stunning gallery of Baroque sculptures, offers breathtaking views of the city and its skyline.
